Peafowl Species, Colors and Color Patterns

The two types of Peafowl currently being raised in the United States are India Blue (Pavo cristatus) and Java Green (Pavo muticus). When a Java Green is bred with an India Blue the offspring are called Spaldings.

An Emerald Spalding is a bird that is 3/4 or more Java Green (the remainder being India Blue). Spaldings are large, vigorous birds that exhibit a yellow lorus (cheek) and intense color overall.

The India Blue peafowl has produced several color mutations, among those Cameo, Oaten, Purple and Opal. By breeding Spaldings of these color mutations we produce birds with intense color and hybrid vigor. By breeding in the various color patterns we produce some extremely showy birds.

We raise a wide variety of Peafowl, including Spaldings in many rare and unusual colors: Purple, Opal, Jetta, Cameo and Oaten, and Java Green. Color patterns include Pied, Silver Pied, White-eyed, White-eyed Pied, and Black Shoulder.

Our current goal is to produce White-eyed Purple Silver Pied Black Shoulder Spaldings.
