Dedicated to the Memory of
Grace Telford Dick
At Mile 1411 (AlCan Highway) in Alaska, 1952
Our grandmother was an avid gardener and instilled that love in
many of her children and grandchildren. She and her daughter
Ellen would take pruners, canvas needlework bags, damp moss and the car
and go on plant hunts throughout the Portland, Oregon area. I
still
have nightmares about being chased by irate homeowners and police on
one of these little 'cutting' raids. Actually they were only
almost
busted once - at Lewis and Clark College in Portland. Most of the
things Grandma took from cuttings grew and thrived.
She brought back starts of the 'Alaska' rose in 1952. There are
many places in Portland and in and around Battleground Washington that
are now home to the rose.
In 1997 I brought starts of the 'Alaska' rose to the Piney Woods of
Northeast Texas.
It is growing here.
Thank You Grandma
