Shipping
Live Birds
We ship birds via the US Postal Service Express Mail. Express
Mail is not guaranteed overnight. Often it takes 2 days for the
birds to reach their destination. When the birds are taken to the
Post Office the clerk weighs them in, enters the destination Zip Code
and writes on the Express Mail label the guaranteed delivery date
and time. Usually it's Second Day by 3 pm.
We use Horizon adult sized bird shipping boxes for the smaller birds
(chickens, ducks and younger peafowl) and large Horizon NEST boxes to
ship
larger peafowl.
We take care to make sure the birds to be shipped have plenty of feed
and fresh water in the days prior to shipping. Since a bird needs
water to digest feed - and no water is allowed in the shipping
container - we do not place any dry
feed in the shipping
container. We do provide small pieces of apple or orange
in most
cases, this helps to keep the bird hydrated during shipment.
If you are expecting a shipment of live birds plan ahead. Get in touch with
your local Post Office and tell them you are expecting a shipment of
live birds. Know
where you will put the birds when they arrive, have plenty of clean
fresh water and good feed available and if possible put them in a quiet
spot. Don't just dump the birds out in the yard and expect them
to thrive. Keep in mind they have undergone considerable
stress during shipment and treat them accordingly.
The Post
Office does not insure the contents of live bird
shipments. They will reimburse shipping cost only if the
shipment
is late. We prefer to not make a claim at the Post Office unless
it's absolutely necessary.
Live bird shipping through the US Postal Service is a privilege, not a
right, and it can be revoked by the Postal Service at any time.
